It is hard to believe that Baapjanma is the first film of Nipun Dharmadhikari. He is the veteran on Marathi Theatre scene, but he had waited too long to enter the films and feel that he should make films regularly. Written and directed by Nipun, Baapjanma is his film. A simple story of a father-children conflict has be woven in beautiful manner taking all the liberties of cinematic presentations. More such out of the box Marathi films are needed from independent producers.
Baapjanma's story starts with the death of Bhaskar Pandit (Sachin Khedekar) and his friends & neighbours are waiting for his children to come for the last rites. Immediately the story jumps back 1 month. Bhaskar is living a lonely life with his man servant Mauli (Pushkaraj Chirputkar) and dog Tiger. His wife had died 4 years ago and his children Vikram (Satyajeet Patwardhan) and Veena (Sharvari Lohokare) are not on talking terms, due to his behaviour since childhood. He gets a jolt, when he discovers that he is living a repeatative meaningless life. That is when he devices a plan with Ashok (Akarsh Khurana) and Mauli to mend his broken bonds with his children before it is too late. Will he succeed? and what is the price he has to pay for it, is what the film is all about.
The plot is believable and the script is divided into 2 halves. The first half before the interval sets up the plot, but the second half is the masterclass, where the film excels in its uniqueness of twists. Acting of all the actors is excellent. Sachin Khedekar is getting all the credits recently for his fatherly roles and he does not disappoint with his BAAP performance. Pushkaraj Chirputkar provides the comic relief. Madhav Vaze is the surprise package as Apte.
The film is unique in its narrative and unique characters, which I am not going to spoil here. Nipun has also taken all the liberty of the cinematic freedom he had to write and present the plot. It does go the traditional way to present the family drama, but also adds a father's mission to mend the bonds. Brownie points go to his direction and he will be the most sought young director henceforth. Technical aspects of the film like cinematography, editing, background sound are all as good.
Verdict: If you want to watch Sachin Khedekar's acting and an out of the box film, then you should not miss Baapjanma. Watch it with your family.
